  Industry Overview

Interest in betting drives virtually all horse racing
Pari-mutuel betting on horse racing is a $120 billion global business
Billions more are bet outside the pari-mutuel system, especially in the U.K. and Australia
All legal gambling revenues continue to grow, now a nearly $60 billion business in the U.S.

Bet amount on horse racing only amounts to $50 per capita

  • $500 in Australia

  • $1,000 in Hong Kong

Technology options for the American bettor are emerging and increasing distribution
  • Congressional action has “carved out” protection for horse racing

  • Internet betting and satellite/cable TV provide compelling combination for bettors

  Current Trends

Declining U.S. on-track handle: 2005 was 3 percent lower than 2002, live attendance in free-fall
Not attracting younger demographic, average age of horse bettors increasing
Races run declining, risks to the overall industry in general

Move to Simulcast betting: estimated 88 percent of handle is bet away from live venue

  • Other tracks/OTBs

  • Advanced Deposit Wagering (ADW): Youbet.com and others

  • Offshore bookmakers: Some offer rebates
Competition with other gaming options intensifies; casinos and lotteries proliferating
  • Only Utah and Hawaii have no forms of legalized gambling

  Primer on Horse Race betting

Win/Place/Show: traditional bets that garner a dwindling share of the handle
  • Win: wager wins if selected horse finishes first

  • Place: wager wins if selected horse finishes first or second

  • Show: wager wins if selected horse finishes first, second or third

Exacta/Quinella: popular “exotic” bets

  • Exacta: wager on exact finish of first two horses in race

  • Quinella: wager wins if first two horses are selected in either order (1 and 2 or 2 and 1)

Trifecta/Superfecta: larger payout wagers: trifecta selects first three horses in order of finish, superfecta requires picking first four horses in order

Pick Three/Four/Five/Six: bets with potentially larger payouts, requires picking winning horse in each of the designated races.

Carryovers: some bets, especially Pick Six, pay out most of the prize pool only to perfect tickets. If no perfect tickets, some of the pool is paid out to next best results and the remainder is “carried over” to the next racing day and added to the prize pool. This can sometimes result in payouts in the tens of thousands of dollars and on occasion into the hundreds of thousands or even low millions.
